Fulidhoo is warm all year: air temperatures usually sit around the high 20s to low 30s °C, and the sea stays close to 28 °C. What changes is the wind, the rain and the state of the sea, set by the two monsoons of the Indian Ocean.
The two seasons
Northeast monsoon (Iruvai): roughly December to April
The classic Maldives season: drier, sunnier and calmer, with the best visibility on many reefs. Boat trips and sandbanks are most reliable, and the eastern channels of Vaavu are easiest to dive. It is also the busiest and most expensive time — especially Christmas, New Year and Easter.
Southwest monsoon (Hulhangu): roughly May to November
More wind, more cloud and more rain, often in heavy showers or squalls separated by sunshine rather than days of continuous rain. The sea can be rougher, so some boat trips are cancelled and speedboat crossings bumpier. In exchange, prices are often lower, the island is quieter, and diving continues whenever conditions allow.
Month by month
| Months | Weather | Sea & trips | Crowds & prices |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dec–Jan | Mostly dry and sunny; northeast winds | Generally calm; good for sandbanks and channels | Peak around Christmas and New Year |
| Feb–Apr | Driest, sunniest and hottest stretch | Often the calmest seas and best visibility | High season; Easter busy |
| May–Jun | Monsoon change; showers and stronger winds | More cancellations; check conditions daily | Quieter, often cheaper |
| Jul–Sep | Southwest monsoon; mixed sun and squalls | Rougher crossings; diving when sea allows | Quiet; good deals possible |
| Oct–Nov | Transition; variable, often improving | Increasingly calm days | Shoulder season |

What matters most for you
- Sun and beach time: February to April.
- Snorkelling and sandbanks: December to April for the calmest water, though calm spells occur in every month.
- Diving Vaavu’s channels: the northeast monsoon makes the eastern side easier; ask dive centres about conditions for your dates.
- Harbour sharks and rays: they are around year-round.
- Budget: May to November, accepting some rain and rougher seas.
Holidays and Ramadan
Ramadan moves about eleven days earlier each year. During the month, guesthouses keep serving guests, but island life slows by day and comes alive after sunset. The two Eid holidays bring Maldivian visitors and festivities to the islands; ferries and speedboats can be busier and schedules may change.
Planning tips
- Keep a buffer day before your international flight in the southwest monsoon, in case a boat is cancelled.
- Book December–April accommodation and transfers early.
- Pack a light rain jacket whatever the month.
