Excursions from Fulidhoo

Sandbanks, dolphins, sharks, sunset fishing and a day at a resort: what to book while you are on the island.

On Fulidhoo the excursions are the trip. Every guesthouse sells a similar menu of boat trips, usually priced per person when shared and per boat when private. Here is what is on offer, what each involves and how to choose.

The classic excursions

Sandbank picnic

A boat drops you on a strip of white sand in the middle of the lagoon for a few hours of swimming, snorkelling and lunch. No dress rules apply off the island. See Vaavu’s sandbanks.

Snorkel trips: nurse sharks, turtles and rays

Half-day trips visit two or three reefs. Expect reef fish and corals everywhere; nurse sharks, turtles, rays and sometimes reef sharks at the right spots. Ask what sites are planned and whether a guide swims with you.

Dolphin cruise

In the late afternoon, boats go looking for spinner dolphins, which often travel and play in the channels. Sightings are common but never guaranteed.

Sunset fishing

Traditional hand-line fishing from a dhoni at sunset. Your catch may be grilled for dinner back at the guesthouse.

Island hopping

Visit neighbouring local islands such as Felidhoo and Keyodhoo, often combined with snorkelling or a sandbank.

Resort day visit

Some resorts sell day passes with lunch, beach, pool and sometimes drinks — the only way to have a cocktail during a local-island stay. Availability within Vaavu changes; ask your guesthouse, or book a resort day pass from Malé at the start or end of your trip.

Diving

Fun dives, courses and the famous Alimatha night dive with Vaavu dive centres. See snorkelling and diving.

Bookable online

These GetYourGuide trips visit Fulidhoo or Vaavu, or are worth doing from Malé before or after your stay:

How to choose and book

  • Compare two or three offers on the island; prices vary with group size and what is included.
  • Ask what’s included: snorkel gear, guide in the water, lunch, drinks, a shade on the sandbank, photos.
  • Check the weather the evening before; reputable operators will move or cancel trips in rough seas.
  • Choose responsibly: avoid trips that feed or handle wildlife, and never stand on coral.
  • Pay in US dollars unless told otherwise, and get the price agreed in advance.

Excursions: FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Should I book excursions before I arrive?

For trips from Fulidhoo, booking on arrival or by message with your guesthouse is normal. Bookable online products are mainly day trips from Malé and Maafushi.

How much do excursions cost?

Prices depend on the trip, how many share the boat and what is included. Shared trips are much cheaper per person than private ones. Ask for current prices from a couple of operators.

Is it possible to visit a resort for the day?

Yes, where a resort sells day passes; these change, so ask your guesthouse. Resort day passes from Malé are also bookable online.

Are dolphin sightings guaranteed?

No. Spinner dolphins are seen often, but they are wild animals.
