Fotteyo Kandu

A channel dive many rank among the Maldives’ best

A kandu is a channel through the outer reef of an atoll, where the tide pours in and out of the lagoon. On Vaavu’s eastern edge, facing the open Indian Ocean, Fotteyo Kandu is the channel that divers rank among the best in the Maldives. Walls cut with overhangs and small caves are covered in soft corals, and the current brings in grey reef sharks, eagle rays and big schools of fish.

It is not a casual dive. The site is exposed, the currents can be strong and the boat ride from Fulidhoo is long. Operators typically run it as a full-day trip with two dives, in good weather only, for experienced divers.

What to see and do: Fotteyo Kandu

Dive the overhangs

The best of Fotteyo is along the walls at the channel mouth: caves and overhangs hung with orange, yellow and purple soft corals, home to snappers, sweetlips and shoals of reef fish.

Watch the blue

On an incoming current, sharks and rays patrol the edge of the channel. Hammerheads have been reported here on early-morning dives, but treat any such sighting as a rare bonus.

Combine with Vaavu’s other channels

Dive centres often pair Fotteyo with another eastern channel on the same day; Miyaru Kandu is the best known.

Insider tips

  • Experience matters: Advanced Open Water and current-diving experience are usually expected. Use a reef hook only where your guide says so.
  • Carry an SMB (surface marker buoy) and know how to use it.
  • Book a couple of days ahead and keep your schedule flexible in case the trip is moved for weather.
  • If you are not yet experienced, build up with easier dives first — see snorkelling and diving.
